BROOKE WHITE

By Bill Brotherton

“High Hopes & Heartbreak” (June Baby): B

White rode her girl-next-door looks and personality to a fifth-place finish on season seven of “American Idol.” That personality shines through on her major-label debut (released this week on iTunes and arriving in stores Tuesday). This is a delightful throwback to ’70s singer/songwriter fare, especially the soft-rock of Carly Simon, Carole King and Christine McVie. White co-wrote every song but one – a piano-based cover of Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody” that’s quite good – and her singing is solid. “Idol” judge Randy Jackson, for the first time, signed onto a project by an “Idol” contestant. He’s hitched his wagon to a rising star. Download: “High Hopes & Heartbreak.” (In stores Tuesday.)
